MAGiS, the Ignatian young
adult ministry, is offering and an inter-faith immersion trip to Indonesia in
July. The event, which is being hosted by the Faithful Companions of Jesus
(FCJ), will give participants the opportunity to live with Muslim families for
ten days, during which they will also work in a local village.
'It's an opportunity for
young Australians to come into contact with students from Indonesia and to
experience God through cross-cultural connections', says Carmel Taffa, National
Coordinator for MAGiS.
Sr Maureen Merlo (FCJ)
says that the program will offer strong ecumenical support.
'The young people will be
able to see this inter-faith dialogue which is lived in harmony as well as in
many practical ways, especially between Muslims and Christians. At the end of
each day there is the opportunity to come together and share their experiences
with the traditional MAGiS rituals such as the MAGiS Circle, examen and
reflections.'
The immersion will take
place from 2-11 July 2010 in Yogjakarta, which is situated in south-central
Java. The city is renowned as a centre of classical Javanese fine art and
culture such as batik, ballet, drama, music, poetry and puppet shows, and is
also famous as a centre for Indonesian higher education. The cost of the
immersion is $550 (excluding airfares) and participants should register by 7
May 2010.
