The
St Ignatius College Athelstone community and special guests turned out on 21
February for the opening of the new Saint Edmund Campion Centre at the Senior School.
Australian
Provincial Father Steve Curtin and Port Pirie Bishop Greg O'Kelly were special
guests at the opening of the centre, which contains a new library and senior
studies centre.
College
Rector Fr Jack McLain SJ said naming the library after Campion highlighted the
Jesuit's example of how to use the intellect in the service of God.
‘Saint
Edmund stands as an excellent example of the importance of the melding of the
lives of the mind and the soul, of the intellect and the heart', he said.
‘The
example of Saint Edmund is that God has given all of us gifts of intellect, and
we are expected to maximize our ability to use minds. In doing so, our faith will be strengthened
as well.'
The
new centre replaces the old library, which was originally constructed in 1972.
Structural problems with the old library meant that the new up-to-date library
was not a luxury, but an essential teaching facility for the school.
