This
year's tertians have been welcomed to the Australian Jesuit Province, embarking
on their studies at Canisius College in Sydney in January.
The
tertianship process is generally undertaken by Jesuit priests and brothers
after a few years in active ministry. It is a process of reflection, undertaken
with a group of eight to twelve contemporaries, and under the guidance of an
experienced priest.
During
this period, tertians undertake the Spiritual Exercises in full, and reflect on
their development as a person and as a Jesuit. There is also time spent in
different ministries, to better understand the workings of God in their hearts.
It is the final stage of formation before Jesuits undertake their final vows.
This
year's group is made up of Jesuits from various corners of the world. They include:
Ivan
Bresciani (Slovenia) - completed studies in spirituality at the Gregorian
University.
Kolbe
Chung (Korea) - studied spirituality in Paris and more recently has exercised
pastoral care of seminarians.
Jeremy
Clarke (Australia) - returns from teaching Chinese History at Boston College.
Paul
Gabor (Czech Republic) - an astrophysicist involved in the search for life in space.
Gottfried
Getzinger (Austria) - a Brother who has worked in formation and as a minister
in Vienna.
Tom
Griffin (California) - enjoys his role as director of hospital chaplaincy.
Greg
Kalscheur (Maryland) - lectures in law at Boston College Law School.
Saichon
Khanyulai (Thailand) - has been engaged in formation work and retreat-giving as
well as parish ministry.
Kyung-yong
Lee (Korea/Cambodia) - has recently been a parish priest in Cambodia.
John
Predmore (New England) - has been for some years chaplain to a Jesuit high
school.
Nano
Setyodarmono (Indonesia) - has been a spiritual director to a seminary and
coordinates vocation promotion for his province.
The
tertians were formally welcomed at Canisius on 22 January, then travelled to
Gerroa with their mentors, Adrian Lyons and Joseph Sobb, for some days of
personal storytelling.
