New deacon spends time in the country

20-Jan-2010

Newly ordained Jesuit deacon Jin-hyon Lee has had his first experience of sacramental ministry in the remote Australian diocese of Port Pirie.

After being ordained in Melbourne by Jesuit Bishop Greg O'Kelly on 3 December, Jin-hyon followed the Bishop back to his home diocese in South Australia for two weeks before Christmas.

Deacon Jin-hyon spent two weekends in the Parish of Cleve. At Cowell, he officiated in his first baptism, Lauren Beinke, the daughter of Steve and Michelle Beinke (pictured below, with twin sons Steve and Michelle).

He also managed to visit the farm of the Burton Family near Rudall, and spoke of their shared farming background. Jin-hyon said back home in Korea, his father had a single acre that he farmed. The Burtons have a 15,000 acre property. Jin-hyon also had a ride in the harvester and was allowed to drive it briefly (see photo).
