Sister Mary
Denise Coghlan AM, the long-standing director of Jesuit Service and JRS in Cambodia, was officially presented with the
Order of Australia at the Australian Ambassador's residence in Phnom Penh last week.
Australian
ambassador Margaret Adamson presented the award on behalf of the Governor
General of Australia to Sister Denise for service to international humanitarian
aid'.
After
working in refugee camps in Thailand
in the 1980s, Sister Denise came to Cambodia in 1990 to set up the
Jesuit Refugee Service in the country.
Her work
has continued ever since. Sr Denise said at the presentation that her dream is
‘to do something for peace and reconciliation in Cambodia and to make a life
more just'.
‘And to
help build a world that our God desires', she added.
Adamson
praised Sister Denise's ‘intellectual curiosity', and noted with a smile that
the award was also ‘a reclaiming of Sister Denise for Australia'.
